"We've Always Done It That Way"
Sometimes this attitude can be an impediment to progress. But a continuing practice can develop congregational loyalty and strength.
One of the distinctive traditions of Calvary is our annual Prayer Vigil. It originated with a suggestion from the fund-raising counselor of our 1962 building fund campaign. He proposed that we pray for one day in the sanctuary from 8 a. m. to 8 p. m. for the success of the drive. Ever since, on the day before Palm Sunday, a few dozen of our number commit themselves to pray for a fifteen-minute period in the church. There is always at least one person in the sanctuary that day praying for the welfare of the church, nation, and world.
Another fine tradition is the annual Maundy Thursday Communion Breakfast. A brief Communion service at 7:30 a.m. is followed by a breakfast in the church basement. Each year about forty people participate in this spiritually and socially refreshing experience.
